THIS   IS   WHY
NETWORK   TV   SUCKS

(ESPECIALLY   CBS)

So, there I was watching the NCAA basketball tournament sweet sixteen over the weekend, Saturday, March 29, 2008 and Sunday, March 30, 2008. It seemed like every time the whistle blowed and there was a stoppage of play, one of the CBS announcers would remind everyone about the great comedies on CBS Monday night. They kept referring to "Two and a Half Men" as "America's #1 Comedy" and to CBS as "America's Most Watch Network." I had never seen any of these four shows before. I had no other plans for Monday evening, March 31, 2008, so I decided to tune in to my local CBS station and check out these great comedies on "America's Most Watched Network."

Well, I honestly can't remember the last time I watched four comedies for a total of two hours and did not laugh even once. These four shows were totally lame! The jokes weren't that funny and the punch lines were totally predictable.

The Big Bang Theory (8:00-8:30 ET) -
This show was about two nerds (Johnny Galecki and Jim Parsons) who shared an apartment. A female neighbor (Kaley Cuoco) brought germs into their apartment, and one of the nerds, Parsons, came down sick. Galecki snuck out with friends and attended a Planet of the Apes movie marathon at a theatre while Cuoco cared for Parsons. When Galecki tried to sneak back into the apartment for something, he was caught, Cuoco left, and Galecki was trapped at home to care for Parsons.

This show was not funny at all, unless you enjoy jokes about different colors of mucus discharge. The story line was very predictable and the jokes weren't funny at all.

How I Met Your Mother (8:30-9:00 ET) -
In this episode, Neil Patrick Harris tries to pick up women. Just as the conversation with the woman is getting somewhere, Harris has to leave for a minute or two, only to return and get slapped in the face. He quickly figures out that a former girlfriend who he mistreated or abused is stalking him and warning the women to stay away from him.

With the help of his friends Alyson Hannigan, Cobie Smulders, Jason Segel, and Josh Radnor, the five of them set up a bracket similar to the NCAA tournament and fill the slots with the 64 former girlfriends most likely to seek revenge on Harris. They manage to narrow the field down to the final four, and Harris goes to apologize to each of those four women, but it turns out to be none of them.

How funny and exciting was this show? Well, this might give you an idea. After watching what seemed like an eternity I looked at my watch and it was only 8:37 PM. That's right - only seven BORING minutes down and another long 23 minutes to go.

Two And A Half Men (9:00-9:30 ET) -
So, this is America's #1 comedy? America must be in trouble! The writers should go on strike again and not return this time!

Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer live in the same house. Cryer is divorced and has a teenage son from that previous marriage. In this episode Cryer bumps into his old female neighbor and learns that she is divorced also. Cryer talks her into sleeping with him. Afterwards, she mentions something to Cryer about how his ex-wife receives better sex from her current husband than she did from Cryer, and Cryer sets out to figure out why.

There were a lot of references to body parts and sexual references (hoses, sowing seeds, etc.) If you are immature you might find some of this funny. I did not find it the least bit funny. I'm still trying to figure out why Charlie Sheen would make a career move like this after all the success he enjoyed in the movies.

The New Adventures Of Old Christine (9:30-10:00 ET) -
In my opinion, this show very well could have been the best of the four. Believe me, that isn't saying much.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays the part of Christine in this comedy(?) and from what I gather, she lives with her brother (Hamish Linklater,) and although divorced she remains on good terms with her ex-husband (Clark Gregg.)

Louis-Dreyfus is having hot flashes and goes to see her gynecologist. At first, both Louis-Dreyfus and her gynecologist believe she may be perimenopausal. Louis-Dreyfus borrows some cream from a friend which happens to be testosterone cream. However, in the end, it turns out Louis-Dreyfus just has chicken pox.

On second thought, this show wasn't that funny. Some immature people may have enjoyed the humor in the gynecologist's office. I didn't think the jokes were funny at all and they were all very predictable. I'm sure some men enjoyed the scene where Louis-Dreyfus vacuumed the living room in nothing but a bra! Sexy? Maybe. Funny? No.
